Chaplain Rennebohm’s new book

The Mental Health Chaplaincy

That each may have a home,
that all may safely rest
and be well

Gentle Bible

The Bible can be difficult and even perilous for people struggling with a brain disorder. The Chaplaincy has cared for people who are frightened and worried by passages heavy with violence and judgment. We have encountered patients who are lost or frustrated in their search for hope and encouragement, or who have struggled to reconcile their medical treatment with their understanding of God’s will.

It is important to approach faith resources and scriptures with sensitivity and care, particularly when someone is confused, depressed, or delusional: hence the Gentle Bible, a booklet of selected readings adapted from the Bible, one for each day of the year, that encourage healing and community.

Each month’s readings have a common theme: Hope, Companionship, Community, Comfort, Healing, Wellness, Teachings of Jesus, God’s Care, Wisdom, Wholeness, Psalms, and the Assurance of God’s love. The readings for September are printed below.

If you would like to download the complete booklet, click here. (Downloadable file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.) We'd love it if you would let us know what you think of the readings.

September readings

Toward Wholeness

September 1     This is the consolation you can offer me: Let me have my say.

September 2     Hear me as I make my plea.

September 3     I am like water draining away.

September 4     My heart is like wax, melting inside me.

September 5     My mouth is dry, and my tongue is stuck.

September 6     I am worn out with groaning; every night I drench my pillow with tears.

September 7     For me, there is no calm or peace; my torments banish rest.

September 8     My days have passed far otherwise than I had planned.

September 9     Night makes room for day.

September 10     Morning is near at hand.

September 11     Our hope comes, like the sun dawning over the hills.

September 12     I do have faith; help the little faith that I have.

September 13     You have kept count of my tossings; you have kept my tears in your bottle.

September 14     Have mercy on me, o God, in your goodness, in your great tenderness.

September 15     You have pulled me out of the horrible pit, out of the mud and gutter.

September 16     You have settled my feet on solid ground and steadied my steps.

September 17     Create in me a clean heart, o God ...

September 18     ... and renew my spirit within me.

September 19     Take not your presence from me ...

September 20     ... and deprive me not of your Holy Spirit.

September 21     Grow and strengthen my hidden self.

September 22     We are not stuck with the old; it is God's work to create us new and whole persons.

September 23     We are in progress toward true knowledge.

September 24     Let us make wisdom and instruction our friend.

September 25     Let us avoid lies.

September 26     Keep us away from reckless purposes.

September 27     Let us hold back from wrongdoing.

September 28     Let us stay away from anything that makes us trip or fall.

September 29     Let us hold on to what is good.

September 30     The spirit of truth will lead us to wholeness. We will become complete.
